Community Transport Update

Statement from the CCG

Derby and Derbyshire CCG have carried out a review of the Wednesday morning bus scheme, provided by Bakewell and Eyam Community Transport, used by some patients to get to appointments at the Hope surgery. This was one of a large number of schemes and projects that the CCG reviewed, to ensure that the CCG can prioritise investing in the services that will have most impact on people’s health. The CCG had stopped funding all other community transport schemes from April 2019, so Evelyn Medical Centre patients were the only ones benefitting from funded transport.

Howard Ford and Katy Hyde from the CCG came to a specially organised meeting on January 22, to talk to members of the Patient Participant Group and patients who had used the Wednesday morning bus scheme to come to appointments. It was recognised that travel in Derbyshire’s rural areas can be difficult for older people, and the bus has made a really valuable contribution. However, the representative from Bakewell and Eyam Community Transport advised that a volunteer driver scheme was available Monday to Friday, for a small financial contribution. This in fact offers more flexibility for patients to attend appointments. The CCG considered the decision at a meeting on February 18, and given the option for patients to use the volunteer driver scheme, agreed to cease funding the Wednesday morning bus, from April 1, 2020.
